How Radiator Heat Damages Carpet and Rugs Every Winter

Nearly every NYC building runs radiator heat for months at a time, and while it keeps apartments warm, it also quietly works against carpet, rugs, and even leather furniture the entire season.

The Moisture Problem

Radiator heat is dry heat, and it pulls ambient moisture out of the air, which in turn pulls moisture out of carpet and rug fibers. Dry fibers become more brittle and more abrasive against the grit already trapped in them, which is why carpet feels rougher underfoot by late winter than it did in October.

Why This Affects the Whole Apartment

Unlike outdoor dirt, which mostly hits entryways and hallways, radiator dryness affects every carpeted and rugged surface in the apartment equally, including bedrooms that see relatively little foot traffic. It's also why leather furniture near a radiator tends to crack faster than pieces positioned elsewhere in the same room.

What Actually Helps

A humidifier running during the coldest months reduces some of the moisture loss, but it doesn't reverse damage that's already happened. A hot water extraction cleaning timed for late winter or early spring restores some of that lost moisture back into carpet fibers, which is part of why we see a seasonal uptick in bookings this time of year.
