How to Get Wine Stains Out of a Wool Rug

Blot, don't rub. Rubbing pushes the wine deeper into the wool fibers and spreads it outward instead of lifting it out. Use a clean, dry white cloth and press straight down repeatedly until it stops transferring color. Cold water can help dilute the stain slightly, but avoid soaking the area.

Why Wool Behaves Differently Than Synthetic Carpet

Wool fibers absorb liquid differently than synthetic carpet, and many household stain removers designed for synthetic fibers can actually set a wine stain permanently in wool or bleed the rug's own dye. This is especially true for the oriental and antique wool rugs common in prewar NYC apartments, where the dye itself is often more delicate than in a newer rug.
